Students Return

7:30 p.m. In the summer on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, it is not unusual for me to have the canyon to myself. I might see 1 to 5 other visitors. The first day of the term at the local university was yesterday. Today during two evening hours, canyon traffic has swelled to almost a hundred students and their instructors, either walking or bicycling. Every autumn, the students revitalize the otherwise stale, conservative culture of Utah. In contrast, geese in their distinctive “v” formation are flying south parallel to the canyon floor.
