A Naturalist’s Baptism

5 p.m. The sky is partly cloudy and the Sun is angling beneath the clouds. A classic afternoon Wasatch shower starts, where the rain falls while you are still bathed in warm sunlight. Today it is a proper downpour. The rain drops are fat and ice cold. I take my shirt off and receive a proper drenching. I am cleansed both physically and in spirit. The cloud line passes, I am surrounded by warm sunlight, and quickly dry. For us humanists, this is the form of our Sunday ritual baptism.
