Close Solitude

3 p.m. It is now the 5th day of a hundred degree plus heat of this summer. I enjoy jogging during the extreme heat of the afternoon. Although unfamiliar to native northern Utahans, jogging in high heat is something I’m used to having lived for some years in states to the south. The extreme temperature empties the canyon out, and I have the place to myself in complete solitude, although by car I am only 2 or 3 minutes from a densely populated urban center. Wildlife is quiet. But the canyon is not quiet. It is full of the rushing sound of silence. For those who have lived in Utah for awhile and who have spent time in the deserts of southwest Utah, the sound of silence is a familiar tone.

August 3rd. Between the start of summer on June 22nd and August 3rd, there will be 15 days with temperatures over 100 degrees.
