The Yellow Tube

Noon. It is overcast, but warm today, and as noted yesterday, the warm weather has arrested the turning of the leaves. The canyon leaves have frozen at an aesthetic point of their annual display. Between picnic site 2 (mile 0.2) and picnic site 7 (mile 1.1), the lower canyon is now a tube of yellows, oranges, reds, and pale yellow-greens. A younger runner pauses to talk with an old runner, a well-liked man in his 80’s who sports a Boston Marathon t-shirt. “It’s like running in a painting,” the younger says. Green, the color of late spring and summer, is less than ten percent of the landscape. The next storm will change this.
