Flycatcher

3:00 p.m. A Western flycatcher (Empidonax difficilis) is playing around the pool at picnic site 2. It flits from stream rocks into vegetation on the stream banks, apparently attempting to flush out small insects. It is full of nervous energy. I am in a mood today and my affect projects on the flycatcher. Is the flycatcher a ceaseless worker like so many people are in modern post-industrial capitalism with no real prospect of rest? Or is the flycatcher at one with itself and nature, and so it goes about its work with a sense of joy and wholeness?

On July 22nd, 1992, a 150 acre brush fire started near the Lime Kiln near the Avenues-City Creek ridge and next to luxury homes on Tomahawk Drive (Salt Lake Tribune, July 23, 1992).
